Welcome to
Featherfield Farm
Poultry Keeping (May)

Featherfield Farm is pleased to welcome Julian Pawlowski for the first of two workshops for 2020. Julian has been working with Featherfield Farm as farm manager for over two years. This fully practical introduction to keeping Poultry course is available on two different dates, Saturday 23rd May or Saturday 15th August. This is the page for the May course.

This hands on one-day course, led by Julian Pawlowski, is ideal for both beginners and poultry enthusiasts. At the end of this course, participants will have enough knowledge and skill to confidentially to take up this wonderful hobby or start showing and breeding.

The course will cover the following topics...
Brief introduction and history of chickens, ducks and poultry, breeds and characteristics.
How to safely hold a chicken, wing clipping etc.
Housing poultry – do’s and don’t, helpful equipment to make life easier and safer.
How to avoid disasters.
How to layout a poultry pen, size, protection and planting for good health.
Breeding birds – what is needed, natural or incubator, selecting good stock.
Health, diet, natural foods, insects and plants to make life favourable for your flock.
Poultry health, diseases and how to spot them quickly, remedies and treatments and parasites and management.
A live exercise in how to wash, blow dry and present a chicken ready for a show.

This one day course will be held in our new purpose built classroom. This facility has been designed for the tutor and participants to work closely together so all tasks are hands on with everyone involved. There will be audio visual presentations from Julian, in a most comfortable, warm and light atmosphere. This is a small group set-up, which we have found to be the most successful. Interaction with live chickens will be required to identify health issues.

During your time at Featherfield Farm you can also have access to the farm shop, which has on offer the best organic dexter beef, organic lamb, free range organic eggs, order organic free range chickens, our own honey, gardening books, and a full selection of vegetable seeds, along with select plants and vegetables available when you visit. We have our own bee and flower mix in the shop.

We start at 9:30am with tea/coffee and a friendly meet-up and introduction to Julian. Workshop starts each day at 10am sharp. We break at 11:30am for tea/coffee. At 1:30pm we have a light lunch of soups & home made breads.
Julian will finish at 4:30pm with tea/coffee and any additional questions from that days activities. To ensure you get the very best value from your Featherfield Farm experience with Julian, please bring...
An old jacket or an old kitchen apron.
A map/drawing of you garden with rough dimensions of the area in which you wish to keep your chickens. Please note north, south, east, west perspectives and highlight any major trees or features that could need to be considered in the chickens pen for security. (Pictures can help).
If you have chicken or poultry already please bring an outline of your current house and locations, and any issues that are a problem that need addressing.
A note book.

Our facilities include free on farm parking, heated onsite toilets, heated classroom & farm shop. You can also witness first hand one of Irelands National Farming for Nature Ambassador Farms for 2019.
