Grow your own Organic food
Sat 25th July

Featherfield Farm is pleased to welcome Klaus Laitenberger back for the third of three workshops for 2020. Klaus has been working with Featherfield Farm for over five years. The garden was designed to include Klaus’s ideas for the perfect demonstration garden.

During the two days you will learn first hand...
*  How to layout your vegetable garden to its best advantage.
*  How you can build your own raised vegetable beds at home.
*  How to improve your soil health.
* Klaus will show you how to build, operate and manage the perfect compost unit.
*  Check out the perfect soft fruit set-up, and how to keep the birds out, safely.
*  How to encourage beneficial insects as the best pest control in the world, so you won’t need chemicals in your garden.
*  Which vegetables to grow, when to plant them, and your own crop rotation system.
*  The “jam jar soil test” this is an ingenious method to show soil type and then how to manage them.
*  The glass fronted worm observation box, clearly showing the incredible power of worms and their essential role in keeping your soil healthy.
*  Flooding and soil compaction – simple methods to keep your soil in perfect condition, readily adjusting to our changing climate.
*  Seed sowing pods, with all the vegetables you wish to grow this year.
*  The practical demonstration of making a hugel bed and a lazy bed.

We start at 9:30am with tea/coffee and a friendly meet-up  and introduction to Klaus. Workshop starts each day at 10am sharp. We break at 11:30am for tea/coffee. At 1:30pm we have a light lunch of soups & home made breads.
Klaus will finish at 4:30pm with tea/coffee and any additional questions from that days activities. To ensure you get the very best value from your Featherfield Farm experience with Klaus, please bring...

*  A soil sample and a sod sample from your vegetable plot or garden (about 1 kilo in weight) so Klaus can help you assess what is needed for your garden.
*  A drawing of your garden with dimensions (pace it out if you don’t have a long enough tape). Please note north, south, east, west perspectives and highlight any trees or features that need to be considered in the gardens layout (phone pictures would help). If you have an established vegetable garden please bring an outline of last years crops and locations, and any issues you
experienced.

*  Jam jar with lid
*  Wellington/water proof boots,
*  Note book, warm jacket.

You can witness first hand one of Ireland's national Farming For Nature Ambassador Farms for 2019. Facilities include parking and heated classroom. During your time at Featherfield Farm you also have access to the farm shop. We sell Organic Dexter beef, Organic lamb, free range Organic eggs, Organic free range chicken, and our own honey. We have gardening books, and a full selection of vegetable seeds, along with select plants and vegetables available when you visit.
